Let’s explore the world of storytelling! If your students love to create imaginary places and save the world, or if they struggle to write sentences, Explore Writing is the class for them. By providing brainstorming graphic organizers, teaching students how to plan and develop a story, and helping them with the mechanics of writing (such as dictating), we explore both fiction and nonfiction writing. Students are taught to make sentences more interesting by using strong adjectives and active verbs, replacing weak words, and developing voice and emotion. Do you want to learn how to cook at home? Do you want to work in a professional kitchen with a real caterer? Do you want to be my sous chef? Come on! Say, “Yes!” Sous Chefs students start with the skills they have when they walk in the kitchen, and we build from there to cooking on larger appliances. In this class, all levels of meal preparation occur for snacks, appetizers, breakfast, lunch, dinner, desserts, and more. Students learn leadership, communication, effective listening, and how to be a team player. They practice reading independently and complete their recipes as much as they can on their own. Sail into Reading focuses on building strong foundations in reading and writing. Reading comprehension is emphasized through group discussions, play reenactment, writing and art. Students will be exposed to varying genres including poetry, short stories, novels etc. Phonics and word recognition skills are reinforced through decoding multi-syllable words, memorizing sight words, and understanding abbreviations. Writing skills are further strengthened through handwriting practice, creative projects, letter writing, and a deep dive into grammar, including sentence structure, parts of speech, verb tenses and spelling. Students also learn essential study skills, such as using a dictionary and alphabetizing. Class activities include games, cooperative learning groups, songs and lively discussion.

The curriculum for this Math class outlines foundational mathematical skills for early learners, encompassing number theory, operations, measurement, and geometry. In number theory, students develop number sense by recognizing and manipulating numbers up to 1,000, understanding place value, and exploring even/odd properties. Operational skills are built through addition and subtraction within 20, extension to multi-digit problems, and introduction to multiplication. Practical applications are emphasized through money management, including coin values and making change, as well as measurement of length, weight, volume, and temperature. Students also learn to use calendars (month, day, year). Finally, geometric concepts are introduced with the identification of basic shapes, lines, and the measurement of perimeter and area. Skills will be practiced using varying methods including games, cooperative learning groups, manipulatives and individualized tutoring.
